Tips for Personal Career Development

By: Sam Zherka

It is unlikely that you will come across someone who doesn’t have future goals for their career. Even the Mark Zuckerbergs and Elon Musk’s of the world have visions for their future. As a professional it is important that we are always finding ways that we can further develop our skills sets and abilities. Whether you are the CEO or in an entry level position, your career development is something that should always be on the forefront of your mind. Here are a few ways that you can keep your career development in check.

Continuous Goal Setting

Professional goal setting is a practice that everyone needs during their career. Whether formally set with managers or on our own, the standards that we set for ourselves are the only true measure of our development. In most cases, we look to blame others when it comes to a stunt in our growth. If we are constantly evaluating ourselves and our potential, we can progress even if it takes place a slow rate. Once you’ve reached a milestone that has been set, you set another, and then another.

Learning from Others

It is impossible to know everything there is to know about your industry. Our learning process should be consistent throughout our entire career. If you run a company, you still have things to learn about your designated field. No matter what position you hold, taking the opportunity to shadow, observe, and learn from anyone willing to teach is crucial for career development. Many people get stuck in their everyday routine and tasks, yet fail to take the time to help advance their own skill set.

Weaknesses

We all have them. It is a part of life and sadly, no one can excell at everything. What we can do, is we can take our weaknesses and face them head-on. If you take it upon yourself to identify where you need to improve, you can get ahead of the curve and do your best to turn it around. If you aren’t willing to constantly improve yourself and your skills then you probably aren’t in the right industry. Passion goes along with career development in a big way. You will never be able to truly thrive if you don’t have the devotion to better yourself.
